09/11, We Remember.

On a Tuesday morning, 20 years ago, the world watched breathlessly an act of terror, thousands of lives were lost and from that, we learned - the hardest way - that we should love hard, forgive hard, embrace hard those we love.

Maybe, you are young and have just heard about it, but most of us still recollect what we were doing, where we were, and who we were with, so impacting those images and news felt. Politically wise we could mention the fact that terror had chosen the heart of capitalism (the Twin Towers, in lower Manhattan), the symbol of the US army force (the Pentagon), and yet another plane was meant to crash either into the Capitol or the White House. But what really stroke us all the hardest were the lives...the thousands of lives lost in those buildings and planes, the faces of those walking down the streets of Manhattan covered in soot or of people who just mirrored our gasps when looking at the images.

When does an individual lose connection to other human beings?

Why do we choose the quest to power over humanity? brotherhood? good?

I don't believe that we have yet come across an answer to these questions. Nevertheless, in the attempt of doing so, we look back.

It is quite defiant for it invites us to ponder on human nature, on pains we are capable of inflicting upon those we do not agree with, upon those who dare to believe or have their faith different from ours. Extremism, fanatism, power hunger, wrath, hate only trickle down to violence, poverty, alienation, intolerance, and slavery.

History teaches us we should never forget; on the contrary, we must remember, honor, learn, move forward, and build a good world by laboring hard to eradicate the shadow in our souls by shining our light bright, so bright that those around us recognize it in themselves and are compelled to join in; for we are children of the universe, we have its DNA - perfectibility.

Today we honor the first responders who so selflessly gave their lives for those in need. We honor workers who stayed behind to make sure their colleagues had left the office. We honor those who grabbed a stranger's hand and helped them through the cloud of smoke or debris. we honor the hundreds and hundreds of doctors and nurses who took care of survivors, those who stood in line to donate blood, and people who came forward and offered their service to whatever it was needed.

First and foremost, I send all of my love to those wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, siblings, friends who lost loved ones. God bless you. Thank you all for teaching us so much about bravery and resilience.

I invite you to join hands and send a prayer to those who perished, to those who grieve, to those who fought or are still fighting terror, and to those who survived.

Valentine's Day - February 14th or June 12th ?

A romantic date celebrated the world over. A boom time for business in any capital city. Sales of cards, chocolates, flowers, teddy bears and restaurant bookings increase significantly at this time of year. 

However, this date represents a number of different stories and meanings. Valentine’s Day, known in Brazil as the Dia dos namorados (Sweetheart’s Day), was originally celebrated on the day of St. Valentine. 

The history behind the date is a source of some debate, but it is believed that Valentine was a Bishop who carried out secret weddings in the Roman Empire (given that Emperor Claudius II had prohibited marriage), believing that unattached young men would be more likely to enlist for military service. Valentine was exposed, arrested and condemned to death, but whilst imprisoned and awaiting sentencing he began to receive cards from many young people, saying that they still believed in love. 

Valentine was executed on 14 February 270 AD. Pope Gelasius canonized him as Saint Valentine and announced 14 February as his sacred day. The romantic link can be traced in a number of ways, but perhaps the most credible dates back to the Middle Ages and Geoffrey Chaucer, the father of English Literature. In one of his poems, Chaucer cites the following phrase: “For this was on Saint Valentine’s Day when every bird come there to choose his mate”. 

The poem’s, written in homage to King Richard II of England and his future wife Anne of Bohemia in 1382, was so successful that it quickly gained popularity amongst couples, who considered it full of romantic connotation.

By the mid-15th century, the date was already established and commemorated by lovers presenting each other with flowers, chocolates and cards. Nowadays, in England alone, around £500 million is spent on Valentine’s Day.

In Brazil, Valentine’s Day is on 12 June, one day before that of Saint Anthony, the famous saint of “matchmaking”. The date was likely chosen for commercial reasons, as businesses felt the need for a public holiday during the month of June, which was when the publicist João Agripino Doria, father of the former mayor of São Paulo and current São Paulo State Governor, João Doria Jr., inspired by the success of Valentine’s Day overseas, adapted the celebration for the Brazilian market. 

Even though the day’s origins are perhaps not as enchanting as in other places, Brazil loves the Dia dos Namorados; at the end of the day, who doesn’t? If you’re single, don’t feel left out; take the chance to show how much you care about the people who matter in your life. In spite of all the commercialization, we can’t forget the essence of Valentine’s Day – a celebration of love.

See, it's good that we have TIVO now cause now we don't have to choose between one show or another, apparently, that's how a lot of people watch my show. 

You could be home right now watching me today or for you at home, it could be Friday or Saturday or it could be Sunday, or it could be June. I don't know. 

How did I do at the Oscars? Was it ok?

And, know, some people save up a whole week's worth of my show and then watch them over the weekend it's called binge-watching, otherwise known as being a shut-in.

How many people do that? How many people binge-watch shows? I do too!

It's the new way to watch TV because a lot of shows release the entire season at once.

And anybody binge-watching the House of Cards? The Netflix series "House of Cards"? Yeah, yeah. What about Orange Is the New Black? Arrested Development?Anybody?!

Who hasn't seen their family in 3 months?

I think binge-watching is good cause you can watch it at your own pace but it gets bad, really, because everyone watches at, you know, at different times, you know, so it might be your first episode of House of Cards, but I already know that everyone dies at the end. 

Nah, I'm kidding, not everyone.

Activity: The National Anthem and its meaning

"The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics come from the "Defence of Fort M'Henry", a poem written on September 14, 1814, by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Francis S.Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the U.S. victory.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" was recognized for official use by the United States Navy in 1889, and by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931 (46 Stat. 1508, codified at 36 U.S.C. § 301), which was signed by President Herbert Hoover.

Although the poem has four stanzas, only the first is commonly sung today.

            Essa é uma das perguntas mais capciosas que sempre me fazem.

          Pedindo licença...Só no sapatinho...pra responder.

    Claro que todo aluno quando experimenta a oportunidade de interagir com um nativo  tem aquele brilho nos olhos; uma mistura de fascinação, medo, antecipação e alegria. E assim deve ser, afinal, é pra isso que tanto estudamos a língua estrangeira. Para conseguir comunicar,viajar, conhecer, estudar, trabalhar, namorar, divertir-se...enfim.

Um nativo nasceu ouvindo a língua, cresceu e viveu falando a língua, é natural, é óbvio... a língua é falada assim, sem esforço...puuufff... como uma brisa de verão.

 

Portanto, se você tiver a possibilidade de interagir e conversar com um nativo: NÃO PERCA TEMPO! SE JOGUE. Fale, repita, erre... DIVIRTA-SE! Use tudo que você tem se matado de estudar! A sensação de entender e ser entendido é maravilhosa. 

No entanto, estamos falando de um nativo e não necessariamente de um "professor". De um guia para seus estudos. De alguém que sabe do assunto. Alguém que estudou  para SER professor!  

Você acredita que todas as pessoas do seu país podem dar aula da sua língua nativa? Você acha que toda pessoa do seu país que nasceu falando, cresceu falando a língua e puuufff como uma brisa de verão sabe sobre metodologia, didática, ferramentas de educação e aprendizagem, sabe e compreende as dificuldades inerentes ao aluno na acquisição da língua? Dedica-se à pesquisa e aprimoramento profissional? 

E por que seria diferente com os nativos da Língua Inglesa? Aqui fica a dica!

Esse nativo é professor mesmo ou decidiu vir para seu país, aconchegou-se e pah! Vou dar umas aulinhas pra fazer uns reales?!

Cuidado! Cuidado com os "cursos" de nativos que male male preparam suas aulas, que usam uma apostilinha, ou textos, filmes/vídeos! Procure um PROFESSOR !!! Um  NATIVO que seja PROFESSOR. Aí eu tiro meu chapéu e dou a maior força. 

Eu, por exemplo, não trabalho com Português para Estrangeiros porque  EU não vivenciei ou aprendi minha língua mãe como uma estrangeira. Como compreender a dificuldade de uma pronúncia se para mim é como uma brisa de verão? Como compreender e estabelecer o caminho a percorrer se não conheço a via principal e muito menos as paralelas? Bravooo, para todos os meus pares que trabalham nessa área!

Mas Joy! Eu quero só bater papo, sabe?! Manutençãozinha. 

Wait a minute, hun! Quem disse que nossas aulas de Manutenção não são preparadas, programadas para darem aquele brilho especial ao seu inglês? Afinal, ninguém quer entrar e sair de aula mais aula e  nem ao menos se lembrar do que foi discutido e muito menos com aquela sensação de " não aprendi nada, de novo!". 

Já quase saindo da roda de samba....

Nativos, os amamos. Agora, amamos mais ainda os PROFESSORES! Remember that.
